Arnold Classic 2010 – Predictions

The Arnold Sports Festival 2010 is finally here. It brings back great memories of winning in 1994 and 1996, pictured left. There are a lot of great competitors this year. My feeling is Phil Heath will win, followed by Dexter Jackson, Branch Warren, Kai Greene, Melvin Anthony, in that order. Let me know what your predictions are below. In addition to hosting an incredible variety of sports competitions for both men and women competitors, the Arnold Sports Festival provides benefits to Nationwide Children's Hospital, which is a great thing. It's a unique event and you might want to check out the free webcast on Bodybuilding.com. I have a good, solid back workout that will hopefully be posted tonight, so stay tuned. Don't forget to get your top five predictions in, below. – Kevin PS: First taste of Levrone Formula will be available on the blog as early as next week.

    4.Melvin Anthony Jr.
    5.Kai Greene

  6. Hollander says:

It’s difficult to give a prediction, but one things for sure that it’ll be one of the best Arnold Classics ever looking at the line up and assuming all top competitors appear in top shape. That means muscular AND conditioned. I hope that the winner can show freaky muscularity and conditioning and without a big belly.

My predictions (what I think will be the top 5)
    1. Dexter Jackson
    2. Kai Greene
    3. Branch Warren
    4. Phil Heath
    5. Melvin Anthony

My big question mark is Phil Heath. When he comes in his best shape ever, I agree with Kevin that he can win. But he’s always off in one way or another, so I have big doubts.

  7. Jovan says:

Honestly, I don’t know why Dexter Jackson wouldn’t win. Phil Heath doesn’t have what it takes for trophy, from my perspective. Branch Warren had a great form at 2009 Mr. Olympia but I am not sure they’ll giving him this year’s Arnold Classic trophy.

    List according to quality:

    1. Dexter Jackson
    2. Kai Greene
    3. Phil Heath
    4. Branch Warren
    5. Tony Freeman (I like his form, 188cm height with such a mass is phenomenal, except he doesn’t have body for trophies)

    List according to winning potential:

    1. Phil Heath
    2. Dexter Jackson/Branch Warren
    3. Kai Greene
    4. Melvin Anthony
    5. Ronny Rockel.

  15. mark UK says:

About the picture above, the tv sreens dont do justice to how big the competitors are! until you stand them next to ordinary sized people, i know Arnold isnt the smallest guy but he look smalls on that picture.

  16. rob says:

I would like Dexter to win but sadly I dont think it’s gonna happen this time.

    1. Kai

I think you looked great on the big stage and I’ll know you’ll look even greater on the natural stage…Thanks for inspiring my man, Im getting ready to do my 1st natural bodybuilding show in July…I follow you religiously and i can’t honestly enough thank you enough…

  24. Adam says:

    i reckon
    1- phil heath
    2- dexter jackson
    3- branch warren/kai greene
    4- proabably melvin anthony jr
    5- ronny rockel

ronny rockel has the great size and symetry but ive always thought phil has the great streamlined look that should be more present in bodybuilding

  25. david penwell says:

@jovan- i dont know if you go back and read the others videos but this is a post reply to the last video. i think you misunderstood what i said. i didnt say i knew what worked for kevin or what worked for anybody. your the one that said you have to lift a certain way to build and maintain muscle and i said… all bodybuilders dont train on a certain program. we all respond in different ways so what is to say that kevin or anybody “has to” train with super heavy weights and lower reps to build muscle? it is all about what kind of muscle fibers our body is made up of and how we can shock those muscles into growth. you got your comment and my comment backwards…you said thats what has to work for kevin to build and maintain his muscle not me.

  26. adrian from SD says:

dude!! thank the lord, the formula is finally coming out. i need that intense edge!!!! Ima hit the gym acting like im kevin levrone himself…..minus 150lbs of course

  27. david penwell says:

kevin what is in the new formula?

  28. saturnDust says:

I think Branch might be rewarded this year.
    1)Branch Warren
    2)Phil Heath
    3)Dexter Jackson
    4)Kai Green
    5)Toney Freeman

  29. marty says:

You deserved those 1st place wins Kevin. You should have won a few Mr Os too.I cant imagine how you felt waiting with that long pause……then runner up Kevin Levrone.BULL SHIT!

  30. marco says:

im not making any predictions until i watch pre judging. bodybuilding is a unique sport. you dont know who is going to show up in shape. so just we know branch is going to be onstage and dexter………. it doesnt mean they are going to do well for sure .

as far as the levrone formula ? kevin are you speaking of the N O product ?

  31. JL2 says:

    1. Phil Heath
    2. Dexter Jackson
    3. Kai Greene
    4. Branch Warren
    5. Mevin Anthony

  32. Tarvi says:

    1. Phil Heath
    2. Dexter Jackson
    3. Kai Greene
    4. Branch Warren
    5. Toney Freeman
    6. Roelly Winklaar

    Hope Phil win!!!

  33. KevinZ says:

    Hmm difficult..

    I would go for:

    1.Kai Greene
    2.Dexter Jackson
    3. Branch Warren
    4. Phil Heath
    5. Ronny Rockel

  34. mak says:

@Neo – i think toney might beat out ronny, but i agree with the rest

  35. Pablo Moran says:

    What about Hidetada and Rockel!!!

I think it is such a high level that it is unpredictable.
It is a matter of any of the top screws it up with the prep and that will determine the result.

  36. Norweigian says:

hm, i think i will buy the Levrone Formula. But i wonder, would it be legal in Norway? I think they had to ligthen up the first no-explodes versons that came by.

Richard Jamaica, im you enemy for life because i said that this blog may not be the rigth place for disaters topics. I think your are very stupid and i think you are judging me cause im a white guy living in the richest part of the world.
I think the Tahitidisater was one of the cruelest ever and i feel real sorry for the families losing their moms, dads, sisters and brothers but i feel the same way for those Tsunamivictims in Chile.
Stil i feel this is not the rigth place to talk about it and being a member of this blog gives me the rigth to say that, even to Kevin.

  37. FEVER says:

    1. Branch Warren
    2. Phil Heath
    3. Kai Greene
    4. Dexter Jackson
    5. Ronny Rockel
    6. Roelly Winklaar

  38. Bas says:

    1. Kai – but I hope he’ll get a different haircut and a somewhat conservative posing routine. :P A change in the hip hop stuff is probably unrealistic.. however he’s of course a unique individual with his own taste.
    2. Dexter
    3. Phil
    4. Branch
    5. Melv

  39. Gebriel says:

    1 Phil Heath
    2 Branch Warren
    3 Dexter Jackson
    4 Kai Green
Last 2 weeks Branch was in very good shape( better than Olympia pre contest)
    Phil is stronger than Dexer
Kai want to bring the “freak” factor because on Olympia when he was lighter he lose
for Roelly Winklaar its pro debut but i think he will be strong

  40. Mo says:

@Jovan and second paragraph to anyone

hey bro I was wondering if you could tell me what your natural limit/potential is at or beleive it could be (since u said the only way u can get any better is too use), is it possible to get too 3 plates 10 reps???

Secondly if I’m 230 pounds with about 18% bodyfat and have minor cuts but not ripped and no six pack….HOW LONG should I be doing cardio for and how many calories should I be burning per day, if my goal was to be 210-215 decently ripped with abs?????

Question Is sort of weird lol….any advice

  41. Adam says:

    @ mo
yea man its possible to get to 3 plates 10 reps naturally you just gotta cycle through low reps and high reps to keep breaking through plateau’s
to really drop bodyfat you want to be doing about 30-45 mins of cardio before breakfast and then again in the evening
also sprint/interval training is a great way to burn fat as well
just when doing high intensity interval training you’d want to eat a meal again about an hour afterwards as after the intense session is when you burn most fat rather than during the workout with low intensity cardio

im a personal trainer specialising in strength and conditioning incase you thought i was rambling hahah

hope it works for you man
    take it easy

  42. Alexgiano says:

Kai Retain! But take a look around! Phil won’t be so far!!!

  43. Jovan says:

@Mo – Let’s not clutter this or any other thread anymore. I will gladly talk and share my experience via MSN. My MSN is: reevaluation[at]live.com

    Cheers.

  44. Sebastian from Germany says:

    1. Branch
    2. Kai
    3. Dex
    4. Phil
    5. Ronny Rockel
    6. Toney Freeman

  45. Omar says:

3 plates for 10 reps naturally?! Come on Mo let’s have higher standards for us natural bodybuilders than that!

I am just your average gym enthusiast and I can put up 315×12 reps, I mean granted i’ve been training for 8 years, but I’ve seen natural guys push around 365×10.

If you set your standards low your setting yourself for low achievements.

If you say for instance “No natural bodybuilder could ever come in at 6″ 230 lb in contest shape” then all you are doing is limiting yourself. The best became the best because they didn’t believe that “such and such” was impossible. That same theme is seen when you look at the greats in every sport.

Now i’m not saying your gonna look like Levrone in his prime or Ronnie Coleman, but 3 plates for 10 reps? At least set those standards higher at like 4 plates for 10 reps. :)

    Ohh ya my top 5
    1.) Dex
    2.) Phil
    3.) Branch
    4.) Kai
    5.) Ronny Rockel

  46. Big Rick says:

Im at the Arnold Classic….Im hoping Branch Phil Kai Dex. Anyone else here???? The fitness and figure women last night where HOT!!! Having an awesome time. Being here makes you want to get back into the gym…i need the formula baby!

  47. Rob says:

    1. Branch Warren
    2. Kai greene
    3. Ronny Rockel
    4. Roelly Winklar
    5. Dexter Jackson

  48. david penwell says:

jovan will gladly share the info via msn so nobody can comment on it here haha

  49. Mits87 says:

    1. Dexter jackson
    2. Phil Heath
    3.Kai Greene
    4. Branch Warren
    5.Melvin Anthony

  50. david penwell says:

    1. dexter
    2. branch

cant do a top 5 because i havent been following anybody else really to see where they are at. i dont like kai his gut is huge and he is is just huge without looking all that good. if dexter is ripped and comes in full he has it for sure. branch will probably have a hard time nailing last years condition but if he does he may be a #1 this ear. phil is awesome of course excluding the chest. if he has to stand next to branch i think branch will take this one home. it will probably all be up to conditioning this year. is there a reason jay isnt in there for anybody? did i miss something with him not competing this year or are we just not thinking he will be up to par this year? if he is i think he will probably be #3 right over phil heath but thats pretty much as close as i can call it not following a lot of the top guys this year. i have been focused a lot on my training and have been unmotivated watching this big guys lately.

  51. david penwell says:

when i said is jay competing this year i was speaking of the olympia but i was keeping the same lineup for the arnold classic but only with jay cutler thrown in for the olympia this coming year

  52. Rick says:

Man! Just saw the prejudging. Phil blows me away! Awesome! Can’t wait til the finals.

  53. Jovan Nikolic says:

    @david penwell – I don’t want to clutter Kevin’s posts anymore with off-topic posts.

We all have our thoughts of bodybuilding built by reading, training and experiencing all other details. Being obsessive-compulsive about most of the things I am doing on daily basis, I read a lot about bodybuilding, anabolism, steroids, growth hormone and overall, about human body. I learned I was training for almost two years for nothing eating at “wrong time”, lifting “wrong” weights, doing unnecessary exercises.

The main reason for my visits to this blog is explanation of details; I want to hear him, for the most time. I am interested in his knowledge and experience. But, I found this blog a bit ostensive for my taste and never heard single detailed explanation.

I read one time in daily newspapers that people are mostly on the forums & blogs because of one thing – arguing. After using internet for 10 years I am very sure of it. I am interested in rational discussion only.

  54. Randy says:

    1.) Phil
    2.) Kai
    3.) Dexter
    4.) Branch
    5.) Freeman

If it doesn’t go in this order, something changed between prejudging and final.

IMPORTANT NOTE******************* Looking forward to the future of bodybuilding, how about that WINKLER?!?!?!

Put a BACK on WINKLER & he is going to be an absolutey AWESOME champion in any event he wants!! I would SOOOOOOO look forward to seeing that fluid, separated, yet thick, full muscular look that’s been missing from the IFBB since guys like Kev & Flex stepped off the stage!!!!!!!!!

  55. Hollander says:

    Yes,

Phil has hit the mark and should win if he can at least retain this awsome shape. Kai is also impressive, but not conditioned enough, especially in his upper body. Branch is ok, but not as good as in last years Olympia. His back is let down. Dexter did something wrong, because he really is not up to the standard he usually is.

My guess right now after prejudging is:
    1. Phil
    2. Kai
    3. Branch
    4. Dexter
    5. Winklaar

  56. Asmir K. says:

    My top 3:
    1:Phil
    2:Dexter
    3:Branch

Hope to try that LevrOne Formula Kev!

  57. Richard - Jamaica says:

    @Norweigan
You need to read more slowly and stop seeing everything said to you as an assualt on you as a person. I have no time for enemies in life as its a waste of my time, especially someone I’ve never met.

  58. Richard - Jamaica says:

    @Norweigan
You need to read more slowly and stop seeing everything said to you as an assualt on you as a person. I have no time for enemies in life as its a waste of my time, especially someone I’ve never met.
Now as I said there is some merit to the things you say but persons do not listen because they see you as a bad person with poor personality.
Now you have really made me wonder if they are right. You being white and from a rich country is irrelevant to anything here. And you have made assumsions about me and Jamaica by saying that. Now I have been to many countries in Europe, the USA and China and from a personal standpoint the only place i was impressed by is China (beautiful and nissunderstood place).
Always bear in mind money and quality of life are not the same and it may suprise you but being ‘white’ means nothing anymore.
Im pretty sure if you were to do a survey on the most desirable places to live worldwide JAMAICA would beat Norway everytime.

  59. david penwell says:

@richard…do you live in jamaica currently? if so what is the shipping like from their to us ohio haha

  60. Richard - Jamaica says:

Until Bodybuilding contests are determined by your physique on the day and not by your name I will not hassard a quess on placements. I love the sport but the administration and regulation is poor.
Tony Freeman for example has had an excellent body for years but he is not one of there boys so he doesnt get placed higher. Hope that problem can really be addressed soon.

  61. Sam Mansour says:

Been a fan of phils physique since the beginning, he looks amazing

  62. Jerome Mayle says:

I looked for you there but didn’t see you, funny thing is. I was waiting in line to use the bathroom and Ronnie got in line behind me, I freaked out and then the rest of the line followed suit. Funny.

  63. Rick says:

    Wow! Kia won! Cool!

  64. Randy says:

Good for Kai but folks are stirring. Checkout bb.com and it appears everybody’s noticing the same thing.

How the %!% do you put Dexter 4th in that?? I thought *I* was being cruel by putting him 3rd, but I figured they’d have to give Kai 2nd, pushing Dex down to 3rd.

I didn’t agree w/ the commentators so quickly putting Phil out of 1st or 2nd based on “narrowness”. How long can they keep using that excuse? He brought his back up HUGE this time. Made him look much wider imho than ever.

And I can’t say I know where Branch really belongs. I had him 4th, but I dunno. He just looked really weird for this. He looked more separated in the O to me. I dunno. And poor Freeman who just looks soooooo dang statuesque on that stage. I hope he knows how good he looks!!

Glad I’m not an IFBB judge!!!

  65. david penwell says:

heath is always going to look narrow though because of lack of shoulder width and lack of chest fullness. those huge triceps take over and make it worse in certain poses because they are so much more bigger than his rear delts. Arnold used to use that stuff to his advantage he wouldnt hit his weak poses. Now though guys get so big they think they can bring it all and they cant. Great conditioning so far though just still not a big fan of the massive unattainable bodies

  66. Adam says:

i reckon phil had that he looked amazing
kai looked bloated as usual and im really loosing respect for bodybuilders winning when they have the huge guts
my opinion but obviously not the opinion of IFBB judges

  67. Daniel says:

Phil was the rightful winner of the Arnold Classic, not by much, but it should of been his victory. Phil had better conditioning than Kai and made great improvements but sometimes it takes incredible improvements in a physique to change the minds of stubborn IFBB judges.

  68. Anthony P says:

    Yo, Kev

I had my money on Phil, His physic reminds me alot of yours BUT there is only one Levrone!! baby :D

    ciao

  69. Christian Marose says:

Arnold Classic results: Ronny Rockel 6th; Toney Freeman 5th; Dexter Jackson 4th; Branch Warren 3rd; Phil Heath 2nd and Kai Greene 1st.

  70. Aron says:

Kai was a little off but his muscle size, density and proportions gave him the edge.

Phil would have won if his shoulder bones weren’t so narrow. That will always be a problem for him.

Dexter should have been 3rd. I think his winning days are coming to a close now that his lats are too high and calves are too small compared to the new faces.

Branch is huge but doesn’t have the separation the other three have.

  71. mark UK says:

Well they got the top 5 wright, just in the wrong order!

  72. Jovan Nikolic says:

    List according to quality:

    3. Phil Heath
    4. Branch Warren
    5. Tony Freeman (I like his form, 188cm height with such a mass is phenomenal, except he doesn’t have body for trophies)

Interesting. My list according to quality was almost winning order. The only reason I put Kai under Dexter is I think Kai doesn’t have upper body as massive as legs. Judges obviously doesn’t think like that.

  73. abraham says:

I love Kai but Phil was robbed, he was there hard and with spectacular fullness.

  74. Jovan Nikolic says:

The biggest enigma for me is Branch Warren. That guy looks like bodybuilder in attempt, ex-strongman competitor. He is massive, but not spectacularly like Coleman and such. He’s separation is disaster, dis definition too, he doesn’t bring any details on stage, his arms aren’t big enough comparing to the rest of torso. He is just one class behind Dexter, Phil and Kai.

The only thing that separates him from amateurish bodybuilders look is his mass. Nothing else. Strange… And he was 2nd at 2009 Mr. Olympia.

  75. Dom says:

    phil
    branch
    kai
    dexter
    ronnie rockel

Phil heath is one of my favorite bodybuilder but no one can beat Kevin Levrone !!!Best wishes from germany Kevin .Ps
Pop ups are so great i do it after my chest workout and after my shoulder train wow thank you for this great exersice
    i am 1,78m
    102kg
47,5cm bizep 123 cm chest and i am in train since 11 years my age 25 years!!!
and i am clean, thanks kevin for motivation

  76. KevinZ says:

Hm Kai being the winner again, when i saw the prejudging I thought it would be dexter or phil…

  77. Mo says:

Thanks alot Omar and Adam! Wicked advice and I will defi rely take your ideas and put them to use……Jovan thanks as well and I respect your response, makes sense.

  78. Richard - Jamaica says:

Why is it that Bodybuilders are penalized for their narrow shoulders. high calves and high lats all things that are purely genetic. But guys with big guts induced by drugs continue to win. :-(

  79. Aron says:

Richard, the big cuts are not induced by drugs. This is a myth. Large guts develop from off season eating, the use of heavy weights, abdominal muscle size increases and the use of lifting belts.

For a top bodybuilder and from a purely asthetic point of view, that even renaissane artists believed in, the clavicles should be wide, the calves shouldn’t be high but not too low either, the lats should flare from a low attachment, the neck shouldn’t be too thick, the legs should be long, etc. That’s the classic mesomorph shape which allowed Arnold, Haney, Yates and Coleman to win to many times.

Out of the top six at the Arnold, Kai and Toney had the best structure with classic mesomorph lines. Kai won because he has incredible size, shape and density. Toney even at 290 lbs is still very empty. He needs another 20lbs to be a champion.

  80. Jovan Nikolic says:

There is one unpleasant truth about thing you mentioned. 90% of Mr. Olympia winners were above average height among all competitors. You can see that on Dorian (video of 1996 Mr. O he is obviously taller than Nasser, Kevin and Shawn), Arnold (only Lou was taller, but much smaller proportionally), Coleman (taller than Cutler, Kevin and all others… http://tnation.tmuscle.com/forum_images/6/4/644d1-KevinLevroneRonnieColeman.jpg and http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/images/2008/99_british_grand_prix_g.jpg). Also, at Arnold era chest and biceps dominated, in Coleman and Yates era it was back… And so on. There was never narrow and very low height (Phil is champion… ;)

nice video jovan… i see kevin now and how big he is naturally its crazy because i dont think he would be that far off if he actually trained for the o again. but when you see guys like flex now you would have never imagined they were ever pro bodybuilders. there was a big hype about flex a few years ago how he was training all naturally now and going for a big transformation. that got all hyped up and it seems like he didnt make a big transformation at all. i dont know if i missed the end results of that but he was of course doing in being sponsored by a supplement company not free that way kevin does with his transformations. i like how kevin gives the advice first then makes the new supplement edge available to us not make us purchase it first and say thats what made him the way he is.

Cheers for the link to the Arnold Kev :D

When fill Phil Heath is 240lb or 235lb on stage cut! no one can beat him! and i dont think anyone will disagree?

    @Aron
Thanx for the info will do some more research I always though it was a result of HGH.
On the Toney Freeman thing. Ive seen him full and the others onstage have neither the size or shape and he still lost. Paul Dillet was the same he was a monster that had a great shape but no dice (he never learned to pose though so that hurt him)

  88. Aron says:

    @Richard

I appear to have a big gut when I train even though my waist is 30″. It’s just structure, genetics and ab development.

Problem with Paul Dillet was he couldn’t tense his muscle hard. He didn’t have mature dense muscles. They were just like huge lumps of clay, not carved rock. This new guy Zak Khan has the same problem. He’ll never be one of the top guys. It’s also why I never really liked Jay Cutler’s chest and back, but luckily for him he has size and proportion.

I am still having my posts waiting for moderation. Here is my post: http://twinkls.wordpress.com/2010/03/07/blog-problems/

  90. Chris (UK) says:

not much of a fan of the results.. the aesthetics are really lacking in my opinion; If only johnnie jackson could bring the complete package, he seems to just miss something each time. the stage (and im not being sichophantic!) needed a levrone!

  91. marty says:

None of those guys looked better than Levrone. The shoulders, chest, tris on Kevin were just to powerful. There all lucky kevin retired.I just wish he would make one more run at the Mr O,I can just here the crowd rore now!

  92. Chris (UK) says:

    haha, dam right;
on another note I think Phil heaths chest is a little strange.

I say what about it Kev? lets set down the challenge for say.. 2012; this would be a year or so of solid training – just for the fans – hey its the end of the world anyway right? lol no pressure for place. First guy to comeback since Arnold (and that one was debateable). cmon Peer pressure guys! lol ;)

  93. Adam says:

    @ mo
    no worries mate
let us know how it goes down the track yea?

  94. Jovan Nikolic says:

At first, I would like to ask Kevin personally (or someone else, if there is anyone besides Kevin) what is happening with my posts?

My posts are constantly waiting for moderation and I don’t know if it is because of blog “problems” (of technical nature) or is it some of my words that someone is finding malicious?

I am not here to humiliate or make someone “looks ignorant” or similar. Maybe someone has that perception, but truth is I am here for information/experience exchanging.

I didn’t read any other comment by any other user having similar problems posting.

    What is happening?

Thank you in advance for answer.

  95. Nothing is happening Jovan, it’s completely random. My guess is the more times you post the more the odds that you’ll eventually experience a problem. Your large volume of posting means you will likely experience it once in a while. I suggest you let go of the idea that it’s intentional, please continue to post whatever you want and we’ll do our best to make sure it gets through.

  96. Jovan Nikolic says:

    Thanks for fast answer.

Honestly, I didn’t thought on first that it was intentional. As I don’t see my post offending to anyone personally.

    Who knows…

  97. marty says:

@Chris UK,Yep Phil looks good but kinda small,I think its his shoulders, his back is nice though. It would only take Kevin 30 weeks of pro grade training to place in the top 3.or win!

  98. david penwell says:

i wonder why bodybuilders retire at such a young age but most of them continue to stay in near contest ready condition all the time. only a few top o’s i know have retired and came back to compete again in the actual o or the old men O. i guess im just really obsessed with the human body and love how there are so many variables to mess with that i just dont understand how someone loses a passion at such an early age for someone like this? i could understand if it was a contact sport or someone but this is a sport where you can take a few years off and comeback to compete in 1 show a year if you want but they just seem to retire, keep a sponsor for awhile longer and then just fade away and we always wish for a comeback with them

  99. marty says:

It is very stressful for body. Sometimes, it is because of health problems (you know, steroids and such)…
